Several residents addressed the Board at the July 2 Carroll Township Supervisors Meeting about property ordinance violations that are creating unsafe and unsanitary conditions, according to the residents.
Resident Maya Patch expressed concerns about snakes, mice, and rats inhabiting her neighborhood along Route 837. Another resident also addressed the snake and rodent problem, suggesting that the issue has escalated since the demolition of an abandoned house on Caroline Avenue last year.
The resident told the supervisors that the house should have been exterminated before the demolition to prevent the scattering of the rodents throughout the surrounding community. The supervisors responded that there is no legal requirement for the property owner to exterminate before a demolition and that the township cannot spend taxpayer dollars on exterminating private properties.
Two other residents spoke to the supervisors about similar issues, including raccoons, groundhogs, high grass and weeds, and other properties that need to be removed, according to the residents.
The supervisors assured the residents that the township is working on the issues with locating property owners and that they will send the property inspector to the properties to issue any necessary fines.
In other business, the township has approved a request from Waste Management for a two-year extension to the current municipal waste contract.
